What kind of effects do you buy?

I tend to buy effects based on the effect - not on its working. If I think the effect will go over well, I'll keep working at it until it's right - or I'll buy it off the shelf and use it out of the box -- because it's what the audience sees and remembers that counts. They don't care a whit about how tough it was to do. It's supposed to look effortless. That's why it's amazing.
